Strengths-based training programs developed to explicitly encourage mental fitness in standard cadet training, annual proficiency training, and advanced officer training can help officers develop a mind-set that supports, toughens, and guards against the negative effects of job stress and chaos. Although work is ongoing to reduce the potential for injuries associated with these physically and emotionally taxing professions, it will never be eliminated. Therefore, a concerted effort toward building and maintaining high levels of mental fitness is required both at the beginning of and throughout law enforcement careers.
